New Braunfels, Texas

New Braunfels is a popular Texas tourist town that was founded in 1845 by Prince Carl of Solms-Braunfels region of Germany and a group of German farmers and craftsmen.  German names can be seen on the billboards and street names throughout the city.  New Braunfels has a population of over 36,000 and is growing at a steady pace.

New Braunfels is conveniently located between several major Texas cities. Austin is located 40 miles to the north, San Antonio is 25 miles to the south, and Houston is 160 miles to the east.  

With the Comal and Guadulupe Rivers running through the city, visitors and the local folk enjoy a variety of water recreational activities. These activities take center stage during the summer months with the nationally known Schlitterbahn leading the way.  Schlitterbahn waterpark in New Braunfels was voted the #1 waterpark in the USA.

With multiple lakes in and around New Braunfels you are never to far from your boating adventure.  Area lakes include: Lake Dunlap, Lake McQueeney, Canyon Lake, and Lake Placid to name a few.

Every fall the city hosts Wurstfest which is one of the largest German festivals in America.  Wurstfest is a 10-day festival where you will find a variety of entertainment, food and fun on the Wurstfest Grounds in Landa Park.  Some of the best antique shopping can be enjoyed year around throughout the city.

Landa Park should be on your “must see” list while you are visiting. Landa Park offers picnic facilities under the shade of giant, ancient oak trees. Walk or jog on the parks special trails, or ride a miniature train that chugs around the 196-acre park. An excursion on a paddle boat is one of the best ways to see the Comal Springs and Landa Lake. Why not take in a round of miniature golf, relax at the playground or enjoy the flora and fauna on the Panther Canyon Nature Trail? Don’t forget to enjoy the walking arboretum tour with over 70 species of trees! Take a tour through the park on the miniature train.

Historic New Braunfels is one of the top tourist attractions in Texas.   The Main Plaza was built in 1845.  Then the Fountain was added in 1895 to celebrate the 50th anniversary and the Bandstand was added in 1905.

The Comal County Courthouse, built in its beautiful Romanesque revival style, stands across from the Main Plaza.  The bell tower still announces the hour to the area.
