Living in Gruene

With a history that stretches back to the 1840s, Gruene began as a small community of hardworking German farmers seeking their own little piece of the Texas Hill Country. This classic sense of heritage can still be seen running strong through the area’s veins, from the acclaimed Gristmill Restaurant (housed in an old cotton gin) to treasure-filled antique malls stocked with pieces of the past. Though it was eventually absorbed into the greater New Braunfels city limits, Gruene still boasts its own distinct personality.

Thankfully, Gruene’s quintessentially “small town Texas” size (less than half a square mile) does not mean the home selection is limited to a “small town Texas” variety. Stocked with several beloved and acclaimed communities, Gruene truly spans the gamut when it comes to price and home style. 

Cotton Crossing ($260s to the $670s) offers upscale garden homes equipped with gorgeous faux wood flooring, walk-in closets, patios or balconies, and plenty of amenities. Gruene Leaf ($490s to $1 Million+) features large, luxury homes in a well-established community. Gruene River Place, also a new development, is just minutes from downtown Gruene and enjoys direct waterfront access (mainly in the $350s to $650s). Gruene, located in the northeast corner of New Braunfels (three miles from the heart of downtown), also offers residents of all of these neighborhoods easy access to the best parts of Central Texas: 15 miles from San Marcos, 20 miles to the outskirts of San Antonio, 40 miles to Austin city limits, and 20 miles from Canyon Lake. And, besides all the fabulous historic gems within Gruene, modern conveniences (like an HEB Plus and plenty of shopping at the Creekside shopping center) are also close at hand. 

Entertainment and Recreation

A tourism favorite for many reasons (from Guadalupe river floating to delicious restaurants and wine tastings), Gruene is a place where folks from all across Texas gather to truly enjoy the culture of the Texas Hill Country. Why just stay for a weekend? Watch legendary country singers perform at Gruene Hall; snack on chips and salsa at Adobe Verde; and peruse the monthly Gruene Market Days (where over 100 artisans and craftsman share handmade goods) year-round with a real estate purchase right in the heart of Gruene.

Gruene Schools

When it comes to schools, Gruene does not fall short of excellent! Zoned to the coveted Comal and New Braunfels Independent School Districts, parents can rest easy knowing that the schools in these districts are known for highly rated academics, high levels of college readiness, and friendly teachers and staff. Specific zoning may vary slightly depending on location, but many Gruene students attend Lamar, Goodwin Frazier, or Hoffmann Elementary School, Oak Run or Church Hill Middle School, and Canyon Lake on New Braunfels High School.
